It seemed as if all the musical sounds were specially made for me. They sounded like the murmur of a conversation stirring the essence of my brain. Like a secret performance, each time his foot stamped irreconcilably, he was knocking my head.
And that knock seemed to urge me to fi nd a job as soon as possible.
I cried with spirit. I cried, not because I was weak but because I just started to feel strong.
Chapter 5
Entering a basement offi ce, you would see rows of identical desks, identical seats and identical people in black suits looking boring and bored. The light, that came from the few scattered lamps on the walls and the computer screens, was extremely dim, which gave the basement a spooky look. Following a guide down the side aisle from door to door, room to room, department to department, I noticed between the rooms was a huge glass wall. The passing faces looked uninterested and unanimated. Seemingly, the people all looked expressionless and emotionless whether they were moving or sitting. Nothing distinctive, whatsoever. Even the black eyes refl ected on diff erent things seemed the same. Mechanical, wooden and soulless. It gave me an unsatisfactory feeling that this cloudy, surprisingly enormous and enormously bleak office was a depressing cavern. At last, before the sudden brightness aroused my nervousness in the meeting room at the farthest end of the aisle, I found myself lost in a perfect maze.
